England Athletics, U15/U17 Championships, Birmingham, 26-28 July 2024
The second part of the English Championships were held at Birmingham over the weekend. 5 Young Heathsiders took part with Emanuel Asia in her first major championships finishing 5th in her heat but less than 0.1s outside her PB and club record. Suraya Frost produced another creditable performance in her 80mH heat and will return stronger again next season.
Of the Boys Sam Brown negotiated his heat comfortably in 3rd place and then finished an even better 2nd place running in lane 9 to secure a place in the final. He was again allocated lane 9 in the final and finished 7th but with a season best performance of 49.73s just 0.3 outside his PB. Malakai finished 4th in his heat which unfortunately wasn't enough to progress but like Suraya this is his first year as an U17. Montana Dennis however progressed through both heat and semi-final to make the final with a 0.2 PB in the semi final which he just wasn't able to replicate in the final finishing 7th in 12.98 which was still only 0.02 lower than his previous PB.
Elkie Baker competed in the U17W Discus first thing on Saturday Morning. Despite this being her third major competition in 3 weeks and also having picked up an injury in training, she kept battling and threw over 36m in round 3, 4 and 5 to secure a bronze medal.
Well done to all the athletes who made the journey to compete and represent the club on the highest stage.

British Masters Championships 2024 Derby 27-28 Jul
Staying with Track and Field of a different vintage, Israel, Adrian and Tony travelled to Derby to compete in the British Masters Championships - Adrian Day sends in this report :
“ Whilst our youngsters were competing at the English Championships in Birmingham ( reported in last weeks edition ) three slightly older Heathsiders were wearing the blue, gold and red shirt on the other side of the Midlands at the British Masters Champs in Derby. Around 850 athletes aged 35 and over entered a myriad of track and field events over the three days. The impressive number of participants was thanks in part to Adrian Essex’s effective social media campaign on behalf of the British Masters Athletics Federation.
Club coach and athlete Israel Nworgu was first to perform on the Saturday, setting an example by securing an impressive Silver in both the long jump and the 110m hurdles in the 35 - 40 age category. Issues with the Opentrack event management software caused delays and confusion throughout the day but Adrian Day (65-70 age group) managed sixth in the heats of the 100m, qualifying for the final as a fastest loser. Adrian won Gold in the 400m later that afternoon, adding the outdoor title to the indoor National Champion prize gained at Lea Valley in the winter. The 100m final was straight after the 400m (thanks to the software issues); Adrian decided he probably wouldn’t improve on sixth and registered a ‘did not start’.
On Sunday morning multi-running eventer (if that phrase exists) Tony Killilea drove up the M1 to compete in the 60-65 age group 2000m Steeplechase, winning a Bronze. For once the water jump was welcome on an increasingly hot day.
Adrian Day then won Silver in the 200m in a second best ever time of 28.15 (and his PB was ten years ago!). Of course Israel had more than a hand in Adrian’s medals having coached him expertly through the cold and wet of winter and onwards to peak in July.
And if you ever doubt that masters is competitive, 71 year old Professor Steve Peters won his age group 200m in a time of 26.03s. A Consultant Psychiatrist who has worked with many leading sports teams and stars, Steve is planning to break the world record of 25.75s at the upcoming World Champs in Sweden. “
