Heathside win 4 Gold Medals at Middlesex road relays

The main news from the past weekend was the amazing performances put in by our young athletes at the Middlesex county young athletes and senior relays, where they picked up 4 gold medals. But there were also plenty of other excellent performances at races and events including the Great North Run,  Tallinn Marathon, a trail marathon in Farnham, an ultra in Switzerland, the Delft World Icosathlon Champs and the World Masters in Malaga. Plus the SAL T & F award winners are announced.

Middlesex County AA Young Athletes and Senior relays, 09.09.18, Minet Park, Middlesex
There were fantastic results at the Middlesex Country AA Road relays, held in Minet Park on Saturday. The relay distance was 3,000 metres, and the split times (where we have them in the results below) are 1500m as the course was two laps of the 1500m cycle circuit. The competitors brought home 3 team gold medals and individual gold went to Benji in the U 11 straight race.  The team gold medals for the U13 Boys went to Spike ( fastest leg,) Max and Stan.

The U15 Girls gold medal went to Mia, Nell and Rose (fastest leg)

and the U15 Boys gold medal went to Thomas, Ruairi and Jack. Great running also by U13 girls Izzy, Amara and Hattie, U15 B team Oliver, Arthur, Lucas and by Mimi in the U17s Women’s race and by Jake, Sid and William in the U17 Men’s race.

Kyles 10 miles, Kyles of Bute, West Scotland, 08.09.18Dominic took part in the Kyles 10 miles road race up in Kyles of Bute, West Scotland and had an excellent run, coming in 11th place (4th V50) in a time of 1.07.29. He reported back: “Beautiful scenic route (hilly at first and then flattish towards the end) following the southern coast of Kyles of Bute). Well worth the journey (made into an extended weekend break). I can highly recommend it!”

Farnham Trail Run, 09.09.18
Amy Lujendijk took part in the Farnham Pilgrim Trail, a hilly scenic run following the North Downs way. She finished 8th woman, in 50th position overall in an excellent time of 4.10.45, 2nd in age group.

The Great North Run, Newcastle, 09.09.18

In the ever popular Great North Run up in Newcastle, Sir Mo Farah was just crossing the finish line when some people had barely stepped over the start, with a record breaking time of 59 minutes and 26 seconds. But not far behind was our first Heathsider Henry Turner who came in at 1.25 in 244th place, closely followed by Andrew Prystawsky in 1.25.54.   Seven Heathsiders in total participated, full results can be found below.

Tallinn Marathon, Estonia, 09.09.18
Rebecca was delighted to achieve a PB in the Tallinn marathon in Estonia, in the magnificent time of 2.56.07 coming in 5th woman. Fantastic achievement Rebecca and well deserved.

Matterhorn Ultraks, Switzerland, 25.08.18
A late report from Pete Bakewell who took part in the Matterhorn Ultraks on 25th August.  He wrote:” a beautifully scenic 49km with +3600m of climbing, in the Swiss Alps. The ascents and descents were a world away from running in London parks! Worth doing for the epic surroundings. I was impressed by the break neck descending of mountain runners! I finished in 7 hours 22 mins, 113th/600."

Vilnius Marathon, Vilnius, Lithuania, 09.09.18
Philip Hogg ran the Vilnius marathon at the weekend  in Lithuania, this is his report: “ Vilnius marathon is a two lapper with nice shady forest, meandering river and lovely slightly hilly old town to run through twice. Long miles in training slightly got the better of my legs in the second lap (boooo), but a fantastic trip overall (yaay).

Myself and another guy were being paced around by a friend, which I realise now only gets you so far, if your legs simply refuse to go faster the fact you have a pacer shouting “c’mon Phil faster” doesn’t really help! Luckily for the pacer the other guy stuck with the pace!” Phil completed the marathon in a very respectable 3.10.16, coming home in 50th place.

2018 World Masters Athletics, Malaga, Spain 11.09.18
News just in, Ula Cartwright-Finch ran a great race in the 800m finals coming in 7th position in 2.19.18

Delft World Icosathlon Champs and World Masters in Malaga
This is a somewhat shortened report from Adrian Essex on his impressive achievements in Delft at the World Icosathlon Champs and at the World Masters in Malaga.”On the weekend of the 25/26th August I went to Delft for the World Icosathlon Championships. Lots of reasons for doing this - on 24th August I was the world champion and world record holder, but the chances were that by 27th I would no longer be either.  One reason for going was to wave goodbye to my titles in person. My total was 11,112 which is just a bit shy of my old world record, but averages out 550 points per event which I'm happy with. As an example the 10,000m (last event on the second day) in just under an hour scored me 503 points. In total the running events add up to nearly 30,000m or about 3/4 of a marathon.

To say the new world record eclipsed my old one would be an understatement - Wim Threels scored 14,386 points which is utterly phenomenal.

I did wonder if it might be unwise to attempt a decathlon less than two weeks after a double decathlon, but I'd booked accommodation and flights for Malaga months in advance so off we toddled to the World Masters. Clearly the Delft warm up was good for me, I have never before had 5 consecutive satisfactory performances in a decathlon, but day 1 went well and I was in second place at the end of it. Day 2 is much more technical and a struggle for me, and sure enough, first thing, the hurdles went wrong. Still and all, I got it back together and managed to post a total of over 6,000 points for the first time.  So, as things now stand, I'm runner up to the world champion in the M65 category for the 20 event icosathlon, and 5th in the world at the decathlon world championships supervised by the WMA”.
