Simon Baker sent in the following report from the SAL in Thurrock:
A great turnout for the last SAL meeting of the season with the team heading to the wilds of Essex. Although warm and Sunday there was a stiff breeze which made running difficult. Event wins were recorded by Joseph Young (800m), Seyfu Jamaal (1500m, 5000m), James Hamblin (Hammer, Shot Putt), Rachel McDonald (1500m), Lily Woolcock (5000m) and Imani Quamina (100mH)
Sprints
There were plenty of debutants taking part however the stiff wind made conditions tricky Oscar Hall was fastest man with 11.8s. Jasmine Creer matched her PB of 14.1s. In the 200m Montana Dennis recorded 24.1s with Imani Quamina 2nd in the women's A string race. In the 400m Oscar almost matched his PB with 52.8s while Issy Watkins ran her first ever 400m Race with 62.5s.
Middle Distance
Again the club showed its strength with double wins in the men's 800m and 1500m and 1st/2nd in the 5000m. Joseph Young and Richard Macaulay both kicked hard to outsprint the competition in the 800m. Seyfu won the 1500m despite having run the 5000m, Anel Woldegiorgis won the B race. Despite the challenging windy conditions Seyfu aided by Joseph dominated the 5000m lapping all the other runners and only just outside the club record with 14:19. The women were almost as dominant with Issy 2nd in the A race and Lily Woolcock winning the B race. Rachel Mcdonald won the 1500m race with a 3s PB of 4:54 with Milly Watkins 1st in the B race. Lily went again in the 5000m striking for home after 3 laps to win comfortably.
Hurdles
Israel unfortunately hit the 7th hurdle and did not finish the 110mH but had recorded a 3rd place in the 400mH. Imani Quamina comfortably took the 100mH Race with Genieve Weston the B string. She also ran the 400mH with Milly trying the event for the first time. The Steeplechase always provides drama and certainly admiration for those who step up the challenge and here Artie, Genevive, Jennifer and Adrian took on the race. Adrian's 12:19 may even be a V70 age group record.
Field Events
Our star field performer was again James Hamblin who won both Hammer and Shot competitions supported by Joel Hawes who was 3rd in the Discus and 2nd in the Javelin. Trey Corlis jumped 1.75m in the High Jump just 3cm below his PB, Ivan Ross cleared 2.50m in the Pole Vault with Carlos Mingoes a season best of 10.96m in the triple Jump. We are much weaker in the women's field events with no competitor in the pole vault, discus and Triple Jump. However Jennifer finished 5th in the javelin and and Nevecia and Dulce threw the Javelin.
Relays
Slight mixed fortune in the relays with the Men's 4x100m team unfortunately disqualified however the women secured 4th place. The day culminated with 4x400m mixed relays which offered lots of dramatic action and the A team securing 2nd and the B team 1st.
As a result we secured 2nd place overall and a finish in the top half of the table as 9th of the 18 teams.
Thanks so much to our two Team Captains Mark Jefford and Jennifer Wing who are both stepping down after this season, All the athletes who have competed for the club this season, the club's coaches who attended and encouraged their athletes to take part and also the officials who have helped put on the meetings.
