Battersea Park Running Festival Marathon & Half Marathon, Saturday November 23 2024

Gavin Evans writesMatt Beard smashed his marathon PB as a last-minute entrant to the Battersea Park Running Festival marathon on Saturday, breaking the three-hour barrier for the first time with plenty to spare in a time of 2:57:54, making him the first V55 runner.

What made his performance even more impressive was that the race turned out to be 26.7 miles (half a mile longer than usual) If he’d finished at the 26:2 mark his time would have been under 2:55. Also, he and Paul Beale were due to run the Valencia Marathon the next day, but a terror alert at Gatwick scuppered that (and, later, the Valencia marathon was cancelled because of 80mph winds). With the help of Joe Mckeown they registered at the final hour and made their way to a drizzly, windy Battersea Park just in time for the 9am start. “It was a case of mind over matter as the training was done,” he said afterwards. Matt’s previous PB was 3:03:09.

Paul and I had both picked up pesky cough-colds two weeks earlier. These lingered longer than usual and we were both a bit spluttery on race day. Paul had to pull up after about five miles. “I was coughing and struggling for air and I just thought to myself, ‘What’s the point?’” he said afterwards. I felt similarly – lethargic and coughing and with a dodgy stomach (note to self: chicken chilli con carne is not a wise choice for a pre-marathon supper), but I had to finish to qualify for the 2025 Comrades Marathon (which 10 Heathsiders will be running). After four miles I realised the spirit was not with me and that to finish I would need jog to 24 miles and race the last 2.2 if I had much left. I reached 24 on my watch and on the mile markers, and cranked it up, but discovered that the final burst was really 2.7 miles – half a mile extra (perhaps because of the difficulties involved in in getting exactly right an 11-lap course that started and finished on the running track). In the changing room afterwards everyone seemed to be talking about that extra half mile.

Melvin Lewis was another who ran a PB on the rainy, windy 11-lap course, finishing in a time of 3:23:15 and Aaron Smith finished in 3:57:40.

In the half marathon, which joined the marathon from 10am, Ula Cartwright-Finch, who is usually a track middle distance specialist, weaved her way through the slower marathon and half runners to finish in an impressive maiden half-marathon time of 1:26:21, making her the sixth woman in the race. Richard Paton-Mcdermott finished in 1:30:42 and Ferderico Forti in 1:35:50.”
