Welcome return of the London marathon, junior track and field review and the first cross-country of the season

This week’s bumper edition includes the much-awaited return of the London marathon and mini marathon, a review of the track and field achievements of the juniors and a race in Dagenham, the first cross-country of the season.

Virgin Money Mini-Marathon, Westminster, 3.10.21 (2.6km)

Simon Baker sent the following report on the mini marathon:

“38 Young Heathsiders had an early start on Sunday running for their Boroughs in the Mini-marathon over a slightly shorten course of 2.6km finishing on the Mall.  Among a host of brilliant performances were Issy Watkins who was 18th place overall in the U15 Girls race while Kiara Corkin's 31st place in the U13 Girls race saw her a non scoring member of the 6 runners that made up London's team which finished 2nd in the British Road Race Championships behind the North West.  In the Borough Challenge which just includes London Runners Haringey fared best with 3rd place in the U13 Girls race for which Amy and Caitlin were 2nd and 3rd runners and 2nd place in the U15 Girls with Issy and Hattie the first two scorers.

Well done to all who I'm sure will remember the day for ever. “

London Marathon, 3rd October 2021

The running highlight of the weekend, if not the last two years was the long-awaited London Marathon, taking place in a new autumn slot for the first time, thanks to delays resulting from the Covid pandemic.  The new time of year and the staggered starts seemed to suit many runners.  45 Heathsiders were known to have taken part, and over half (25) finishing in less than 3 hours and 5 finished in less than 2:45.  Andy Barnes was the first Heathsider, finishing in 2:33:38, followed within 1-2 minutes by James Hurrell and Chris Holmes.  Sara Black (3:05) was the first Heathsiders for the women, with the next three women coming in at around 3:22 mark. Further down the field, Rachel Scott-Hall and Rachel Tranter came in soon after 4 hours and a few Heathsiders took up the opportunity to run the marathon virtually. Well done to all!

Junior Track and Field Review

Simon Baker sent the following review of the track and field season for juniors:

“The 2021 Track and Field Season came to an end on the 30th September.  2021 has been exceptionally successful for the Club Juniors.  Trey Corlis won silver in the 80m Hurdles at the National Schools Championships and Suraya Frost won a silver in the 70 Hurdles at the SEAA South of England Championships.  The Club had our best ever Middlesex County Championships coming overall top of the medal table with 11 Junior  County Champions.  We also won the MYAL for the first time with Heathsiders setting 7 new meeting records in the process.  5 Heathsiders registered AAA Grade 1 performances their highest grading.

Well done to all the Heathsiders and their Coaches who have performed so well despite the problems created by Lockdown.

Chingford League, Dagenham, 2nd October 2021

Pete Crockford and Kim Butler ran in the first cross-country fixture of the season.  Here are their versions of the events, with both having a different take on the event:

Kim reports: Whilst this was the second fixture in this season's Chingford League, it was the first XC meet.  The course was 8k flat/undulating and super fast on a combination of gravel and grass - not a drop of mud in sight. With men and women competing together we had Pete Crockford representing the men having travelled straight from the Hebrides that very morning on the sleeper service, whilst Kim Butler represented Heathside Ladies who travelled all over central and east London when TFL overground cancellations tried to scupper plans - alas both made the start line on time!

Pete reports: A very welcome return of XC, on a suitably damp and breezy, grey day with moisture underfoot. Kim was delighted to be able to say she was first Heathside woman. She also benefited from misjudging the turn off for the finish, kicking about 600m too early, but, being too bloody-minded to let those she overtook who called “strong finish - well done” after she realised her mistake, gritted it out to the finish! And I was delighted to be back after two years’ injury, two hours after stepping off the sleeper, and cycling 250 miles through the Outer Hebrides. Another well-organised, friendly and welcoming event, on a flat but interesting 5 mile 2-lap course.
