Heathside wins fourth Southern Athletics League fixture
We present a better-late-than never monster race report from the past week or so featuring Heathside’s victory in the Southern Athletics League champs at Lee Valley, some excellent showings in the Inter-County U15/20 champs in Oxford, the Middlesex Road Relays in Hayes, the Watford Open, the Great North Run, two marathons, a half, several shorter road and track races and a duathlon.
Southern Athletics League Champs (4), Lee Valley September 11.
Simon Baker reports that this year’s SAL season wrapped up at Lee Valley last Saturday with Heathside for the fourth time finishing with most points ahead of Enfield and Haringey, Orion, Victoria Park and Barnet. However, 251.2 pts did not surpass the 280 points secured in match 2 so the club finishes the season in second place.
Highlights from the meeting were wins in for Cian O’Donnell (200m, Long Jump), Charles Scates (400m), Roni Kizilkaya (800m), Simon Schupbach (1500m), Israel Nworgu (110m and 400m Hurdles), James Hamblin (Hammer), Brogan Wallace (1500m) and Evangalista Divetain (5000m), plus the medley relay. James Hamblin‘s 56.94m in the Hammer was worth 899 pts, with Brogan Wallace the highest scoring woman with 765 pts secured in the 1500m.
Thanks to all the athletes and officials who have represented us this season and in particular team captains Laura and Michael for their efforts organising teams for the four meetings, and to our track and field captains Jennifer Wing and Mark Jefford.

U15/U20 Inter County Championships, Oxford, Saturday September 11
Simon Baker reports that three young Heathsiders represented Middlesex in the U15/U20 Inter-Counties Championships last Saturday. Milton Cooper and David Baah-Okyere both produced strong performances at the end of a long season but the stand out was Issy Watkins winning the U15G 800m race in a new PB and Club Record. Well done to all three for receiving their first County vests.

Middlesex Road Relays, Minet Centre, Hayes, Sunday September 12
Simon Baker reports that last Sunday afternoon saw the annual winter season opener the Middlesex Road Relays. After being cancelled last year this year coincided with a local festival with the smell of frying donuts and Bangra Music spurring the runners on round the 1,500m circuit normally used for cycle racing. The weather started in sunshine and although gradually clouded over was perfect for running.
It was a useful test for how in shape our juniors are ahead of the gruelling fixture list with 10 league races, three championship races as well as school competitions and other road and XC relays. The verdict? Things look pretty good all but one of the teams running won a medal, Kiara Corkin, with 11:06 produced the 2nd fastest lap of all the Junior Women, the U13 Girls and U17 Men won Gold with the U13 Boys, U15 Boys and Girls all winning silver.
This year we had no U11s who have their own individual road race so the action started with the U13s. Kiara and Freddie Burridge went off first with Kiara level pegging with a Highgate Boy when she passed over to Amy Kirk who proceeded to extend the girls league running 12:10. Frank Bailey ran a strong second leg for the boys taking them to third place. Elkie Baker who due to injuries has not really run much since the spring took over the third leg and although overtaken by the St Mary's and LH Boys team held on to win the girls race. Sam Turner ran the fastest boys lap in bringing the Boys team home in 2nd place.
In the U15s Highgate Harriers showed what a force they will be leading from the front to win gold. The London Heathside Boys started solidly with Ben Ryan with Greg Berrisford Sweet producing a sub-11-minute second leg to bring the team back towards the front of the pack with Eric Beale completing the job on the third leg. Milly Watkins led the girls team off in a very strong field. Mia Rosen started to close the gap though the leaders and Izzy Watkins picked the runners off ahead of her to bring the team home in second place.
The U17 men's team similarly saw a group of three take an early lead with Roni Kizilaya in 3rd place after his lap Fred Beale however closed the gap and finished just behind the leader after leg 2. Bedo Drascozy ran a calm 3rd leg to overtake the leader from Hillingdon runner to finish comfortably in first place. The Women's team of Anna Pritchard, Lucy Corkin and Maia Hampton-Philips all ran solid races but found themselves detached from the main field which made it difficult to close the gap on the medal places.
Well done to all who ran including Luke, Artie and Arthur who all ran well but did not have a complete team.
The U15s and U17s are now set to race in the South of England Road races at Crystal Palace on 26th September.

Great North Run, Newcastle, Sunday September 12
Andrew McGeary, who ran an excellent 1:18:31 in this huge and prestigious event, sent this report:
After last year's cancellation, the Great North Run made a welcome return to celebrate its 40th edition. As always, the day was brilliantly organised with a great atmosphere and support throughout the course. For COVID reasons, this year's course started and ended in Newcastle, a bit of a deviation from the usual route ending in the beach in South Shields, which will return next year. This meant and out and back along the motorway and looping back over the Tyne bridge, winding through the city centre, benefiting from great enthusiastic crowd support. This year's was quite an undulating course with an uphill end but we were helped along by the crowds, bands playing along the route and the Red Arrows. Overall, the world's biggest half marathon is a great experience and highly recommended.

Brussels 20km, Brussels, Sunday September 12
Rebecca Taylor ran the Brussels 20km this weekend. Here is her report:
It was sunny, but not too hot in Brussels on Sunday 12th September for the once cancelled (May 2020) once postponed (May 2021) Brussels 20km.
As usual, there was great support along the route including live music, DJs and lots of locals enthusiastically cheering on runners. At 15km, a man shouted "there's water in 500m and beer in 5km" which generated a huge cheer from runners.
Despite suffering from really bad hayfever, I managed to sneak home in under 2 hours, 1.59:44 to be precise. Considering how rubbish I felt, I was rather pleased with this.
For the record, I did not have a beer right after the race.
Tallin Marathon, Tallin, Estonia, Sunday September 12
Phil Hogg Rebecca Marshall ran this course with better-than-they-expected times. Here is Phil’s report:
It was a lovely flat course and the heavy rain stopped just in time. Rebecca smashed her first sub 4 marathon at 3.50. I managed to claw my way back to a 3,08. Thanks to Jacobs monster track session of 11 x 800.
Veterans AC 10,000m Champs Wimbledon Park Wednesday September 15
Multi-V60 club record-holder Pete Crockford was back in action after a long time out with injury. He sent this report. It was a sticky windless evening, and I was nervous as it was my first race beyond 5k since injury two years ago. But I was pretty pleased with my time and my third place.

Richmond 10k, Kew Gardens, Richmond & Visit Cayman Islands Sundown 5k, Saturday September 11
Sue Eedle sent this report:
I did the Kew Gardens 10k in the morning in 51'22" — not brilliant, but also that evening the Visit Cayman Islands Sundown 5k in 25'51" — also not brilliant, but again won my age group and the two below. Results for both races here: There was an excellent atmosphere, and delightfully, "doing the double" earned me a bonus "Goddess of Victory" medal.
Letchworth Duck N Dash Aquathlon, Letchworth, Sunday September 5
Sue Eedle won her age group (and the two below) with a slow swim but a decent-for-age run.
