New club record in the 5000m & a full house for the Crouch End 10K
The main event of the weekend was the return of the Crouch End 10K , plus associated 5K and junior races, back after a gap of some two and a half years. It went down a great success, both in turnout, crowd support, and club performances, as Gavin reports :
Crouch End 10k, Crouch End 19/9/21
“ The Crouch End 10k was back after a long Covid break, this time out of its usual April slot, and with a few changes (a 5k added to the options, the children’s races in the afternoon, roads closed, which was very welcome, and doughnut vouchers instead of the real thing). It was rather wonderful to see the crowds out again and a full-house turnout for the 10k. Heathside did a splendid job marshalling so big thanks to David Robertson, club supremo Jerry Odlin and all those who volunteered.
It was a warm day and with no water on the hilly course it was thirsty work by the second half, so times were slower than they might have been. At least 37 Heathsiders completed the 10k (out of 351 finishers), 24 men and 14 women (there might have been others who didn’t enter as Heathsiders).
The 10k race was, as always, dominated by Heathside, with eight of us in the first 12. Andy Barnes was second in a time of 35:10. He was running neck-and-neck with the V40 Hare and Hounds runner Gareth Creagh but as Andy put it, ‘he left us for dead on that left turn up Redston Road as you start the second lap’. Eighteen-year-old Oliver O’Connor was third in 35:42 followed by V40s Jamie Morris and David Kirk in 37:01 and 37:09 respectively.
Leo Birmingham was in cracking form for sixth place in 37:33, making him the first V50, one place ahead of the second V50 Paul Beale in 37:58. The rapidly-improving Valentin Valeanu was 10th in 38:42 and Gavin Evans was 12th in 38:58 - the first V60. The last of the Heathsiders to get under 40 minutes was Tony Shearer in 14th place (39:55).
The speedy young Heathside women either stayed away from this one or decided to jog it for fun, leaving the field open to our V50 Tanya Addison, who did exceptionally well to take the women’s winner’s medal (and the V50 one) in 46:34. Sue Eedle, who finished in 52-minutes, was the first V60 woman “.

Chingford League, Hog Hill 18/9/21
Pete Crockford wrote in on the rather smaller number of Heathsiders who participated in the Chingford league
“Rory Willis marked Heathside’s return to the Chingford League by storming away, untroubled by the heat and killer hills, to be first U11, and eighth overall out of 68 mixed U11/13s in the opening “2k” race on the Redbridge Cycle Circuit, “Hog Hill”.
Scarlett Parker (M45) was happy to be back for his first race beyond parkrun after long injury problems, and felt all his work on rowing machines paid off on the demanding hills. I could blame Wednesday’s Vets AC 10000m for my lack of strength on those hills, so was pretty content with my time. “

Hampton Court Palace Half Marathon 19/9/21
Back on the roads, Julia Kelk ran the Palace Half marathon and sends in this report
“… It was a very muggy day and the sun was out for a good chunk of it so the conditions were somewhat tough. I was also surprised that a good chunk of the run was off-road/ not paved.
I was doing it as a training run in the lead up to a December marathon. I ran it blind and did 1:30:42. Not quite what I had hoped for, but I was 1st V40, 6th woman overall and 70th overall.”
70th Julia Kelk 1.30.42 6th F, 1st WV40
Parkruns
60 Heathsiders took part in parkruns this weekend with 1st places recorded by Seyful Jamaal, Beth Hawling (Finsbury), Andy Barnes (Valentines) and Sandra Buckton (Ally Pally). Full results can be found here.
